  • I had lower back pain for a month thinking my lower back muscles were strained. Until i walked into costco and gradually got to a 9 on the pain scale and could barely make it out of the store. Turns out i had a bulging disc that finally herniated and then sequestered (parts broke off). Long term lower back pain could be more than you think. Lower back pain for a day or 2 after deadlifts is normal but anything that lasts more than a week should get checked out.

  • Hey juji. I have had a lumbago a while back and these are very bad exercises for that. It was so bad I couldn't walk anymore. The cause is a strain in the muscles of the lower back. The solutions by my doctors was more core strength training, stretching hamstrings and the gluteus maximus and medius. I got it from using my back muscles 2 much in deadlifts and squats. You can overuse the lower back muscles. You need to make sure core, abdominal muscles (front) and back muscles are used in tandem. overarching is really bad for the back muscles.

  • Don't get me wrong, Matt is a strong, knowledgeable guy, and knows training and coaching well. However, rarely have I seen someone say so many incorrect things so confidently as him in this video. Just to name a few: The lower back musculature (i.e. erector spinae, quadratus lumborum, multifidi, serratus posterior, etc) is not "encased in bone" any more than any other muscle. Furthermore, being muscle, it has very good blood supply, and in fact is worked a lot in daily life and with lifting. That's why you get a back pump with deadlifts or squats. Also, his idea about lactate is an old myth that refuses to die. Lactate is actually a fuel used in the Krebs cycle, it's not just waste that needs to be cleared as fact as possible. This Back Attack machine might work well, but not for most of the reasons Matt provided in this video.

The only bones back there are the spine, lower ribs, sacrum and ilium. And unless I'm mistaken, there's no such thing as muscles that are encased in bone. The closest I can think of would be muscles that briefly pass through an opening like the obturator foramen.

And then I let my legs lower, toes pointed back, and lift up my back end and legs as high as i can and slowly lower back down for a rep. I call them "Scorpion Kicks" because i dont know what they are actually called. But while I can do 5 x 8 of them, when i started out, I had to do 3 x 3 or my lower back would be hurting pretty bad for a few days. My equipment access is rather limited, and this is one of the few things I could manage for lower back activity. And they suuuuuck lol.

  • I don't understand the thinking behind the idea that if your lower back is the limiting factor in your dead lift you should do isolation exercises to strength your back. If your lower back is the 'limiting' factor in your dead lift, then that means it's already getting a really good workout, your dead lift is already working it out maximally. The problem isn't that you lower back isn't getting enough training from your dead lift, it's your legs that are missing out. The best way then to increase your lower back strength if it's the limiting factor in your dead lift would be to dead lift until it get stronger.
