The Inuit people have at least 50 words for snow, because they recognize that there are lots of differences between dry snow, sleet, corn snow, and ice. There are significant differences between these types of snow when you are driving as well. Going on trails with deep snow requires a wide tire with lots of floatation, locking differentials, a good cooling system, and a significant amount of horsepower. These are not requirements for driving on icy roads in the winter though. In those more common circumstances, you are better served by a vehicle that is low and stable with Three Peak Mountain Snowflake rated tires with lots of siping. In this video we explain not only the Three Peak Mountain Snowflake rating but also when to use tire chains, studded tires, and other vehicle features that are suited to a variety of different snow conditions.

  • My Jeep with lockers front and rear was great off road, but not so good on snow packed icy roads where I can safely drive twice as fast with my Audi quattro. The most important thing are good winter tires.
