Turning an Old Axe into a Tomahawk (not!)

Before I even started this seemingly simple project it was destined to fail. The plan was to shape the axe head and give it a polished finish then add a round shaped handle. After I started cutting the axe head I realised I needed to forge the eye of the axe head to a more round shape, but at the moment I don't have anything that would have got the axe hot enough to reforge it or harden and temper it afterwards.
(I should of realised that first, Must have been one of them days)
As I couldn't reshape the eye, making a round handle like a regular tomahawk axe was now no longer an option so I just shaped a long oval shaped handle. When I had finished I was less than impressed with the finished article, Then as I thought it couldn't get any worse after editing and rendering the video most of the audio is missing!!!!
I have tried over and over again to get the audio fixed but I cannot figure it out. So I am sorry for the lack of audio.
Overall this project was a massive failure and probably not worth uploading, but after the time and effort I put into the axe and the editing I couldn't just bin the footage.
If you are also underwhelmed with the finished product let me know in the comments below and spread the disappointment
Ahhhhh Well, On to the next one....

    • The whole project kind of turned out the opposite that i wanted it to, but as the saying goes. Learn from your mistakes, I have never thrown one before so i knew it wouldn't stick in straight away, but I thought I would add them clips in anyway. Thanks for the comment and the thumbs up, Appreciated ED

    • I had to, I couldn't bring myself to deleting the video. People might think it is just an 8 minute video of somebody destroying something, but after the time and effort I put into filming and editing I was too committed. The filming makes a project take twice as long and the editing is probably twice as long again. I was pulling my hair out when i had finished editing and realised i had lost the audio but i thought just upload it anyway and wait for the negative comments:) THanks for watching. ED

  • Try cutting a slice off a big log about 3 inches thick so you are throwing into the end grain. Works much better. Nice tomahawk by the way.

  • Ed Makes Stuff, the fact of knowing that, when and how you doon goofed and learning from it, and sharing the experience so others may learn from your mistakes instead of repeating them, *is* waay more impressive that other KZhead "artisans" and "restorers" who commit even worse crimes yet refuse in their comments to admit they could have ever been wrong. TL;DR: Thanks for sharing the learning experience.

    • Thanks for the comment, I don't really know why I carried on with it after I had realised my plan wasn't going to work due to a lack of knowledge and the right tools for the job. When i had finished the filming and editing(that also went wrong with the loss of audio) I couldn't bring myself to just bin the video, so I figured why not upload it anyway and see what viewers opinions are. I might do another one in the future when I have the right tools for the job and a better plan of action before I start. I am no expert in any of this sort of stuff I just learn as I go but i agree with you on your point about about others who destroy things and then disagree with any comments that aren't positive. • I loved the video. Gave me inspiration to convert my old broken stuff into seeing some action again. May I say that In all fairness, you were throwing at a hard piece of wood, most people use soft pine etc to throw at. I can tell many of your throws were good and woulda stuck if not for the hard wood that displaced the oomp of your cast. Keep on keepn on buddy, good job.

  • You should have kept all of the metal in the blade that’s where you made the mistake . See a tomahawk needs a solid head so it spins right keeping all the metal in the head makes it heavy enough to stick in your target & so it don’t spin side to side & keep you distance around 12 to 14 feet away from your target , you want the blade to spin just once

  • I liked the ebonized handle, though personally, I think an birch handle, rubbed down with some birch oil would have stolen the show. I believe you would be well served by applying birch tar, simple birch oil, to the top of your eye, once a steel wedge is in place, to protect the entrance point of moisture from the inner surfaces of steel. Put a small ring of the stuff at the lower eye to do likewise. Birch oil, tar is easy to make and there's plenty of how-to's here on KZhead. I think you can improve the throwing action by removing some of the handle eye, so the head will have a clear bite at the wood. Cut both ends of the eye to the same, narrow width of the blade, Then, split the eye at the back with your angle grinder, to reduce the eye to about a third, to two/fifths less opening and weld the new eye. It looks like you have too much wood because the axe was designed for a heaver, longer handle, so reducing those proportions should help balance out the action. If you try this, please post the results, it'll be interesting to see what happens with these modifications.

    • The whole project was destined to fail from the start due to my poor planning. Thanks for the suggestions on the modification of the axe, I might give them a try. I just need to plan better in the future. Ideally I should have put the head in a forge to reshape the eye, but I don't have a forge at the moment. A solid fuel forge build will be a future video, I am going to make one from scrap, I have most of the materials ready but I just need a couple more bits which i should be able to get in very soon. Thanks for the suggestions and the comment, ED

  • The ax metal has been cut down in size and he makes a huge handle . Why do so many of these guys do this ?

    @ahunterofdeer1@ahunterofdeer15 жыл бұрын
  • Shouldn't the handle have a wedge in it at the head end of the axe? I think also the amount of metal taken off the blade vs what is left on the collar may be giving you the wrong balance for a "tomahawk" - I am literally the furthest thing from an expert tho!

    @technologybasics4019@technologybasics40196 жыл бұрын
    • I am no expert either, I was just playing around really. I don't think tomahawk axes do have wedges, The head should have been fed on from the other end of the handle with it being slightly tapered at the top to prevent it from falling off and over time it would have worked it self tighter. I did it the wrong way:( The whole project turned out the complete opposite to what i wanted it to. So if i do another one, I now know what not to do. Thanks for watching ED

      @EdMakesStuff@EdMakesStuff6 жыл бұрын
    • You would of had to reshape the eye if you wanted to have a true tomahawk handle. So it would basically only accept round stock. But if you leave it the way it is you could probably make yourself a handle that resembles that shape. And im not sure if you are used to throwing axes. 3 steps away, extend your left arm out and point it where you want to hit, and lightly throw the axe. 3 steps= 1 rotation. The shit you see in movies or in videos where people are running away, so the good guy woops out throwing knives and nails him in the back is actually really hard to do.... Anyways, im no expert either, but 3 steps away, aim and lightly throw. make sure to make the axe do 1 rotation. once you get the muscle memory to remember the amount of strength it takes to get a perfect rotation, youll land hits alot more often. It worked for me!

    • Northern Woodsman, I think this was one of them ideas that you don't really think through but try to do it anyway. I wrote a bit of info in the video description about this failed project:( Aswell as my lack of knowledge, I don't even have the right tools to heat the metal hot enough to reshape it. I don't know what i was thinking when I decided to do it but once i had started i had to finish it. Thanks for the tips on throwing it, I will give it a go next time I have a play with it. I might make another in the future when i have the right tools for the job, Thanks for watching ED
