  • ya know what's weird, there are a ton of beginner vids and trout vids on YT but Matts comes out with one and I'm all in lol. It doesn't even matter what you're doing at this point we just love watching you man. Thanks for the content, wish there was a new vid every couple days!

  • Finally, no one can teach me fishing. Like theres so many rods and lures and types of fish and so many many things. And most youtubers make "begginer guides" on how to catch these giant fishes. Talking as if you already know the basics. THIS IS A BEGGINER VIDEO. Thank you so much...

  • Takes me back to your OG days when you would fish rivers and streams and do a "catch and cook". Love this version of educating the first timer! Strong work brah!

  • Honestly, in all my years watching KZhead since 2007 in the Daxflame, nigahiga, Fred days til now, your channel has to be one of if not my absolute favorites. Whats crazy is, I don't even fish, never really have, AND I dont like the taste of fish really, never eat it other than the random sushi day once or twice a year. That must mean its you that I enjoy watching. I hope to be able to meet you one day (Im in NC) because you are such a cool dude, been watching since the beginning. You channel has recently been inspiring me to get out more into nature, so maybe I'll wind up doing my first catch and cook one day, solely dedicated to you :)

  • Really makes you feel like you went along on a fishing trip from start to finish; from the stop at the tackle and bait shop, the trip the fishing spot, the set backs, making adjustments, all the way to the cleaning and cooking of the fish. It's more than a tutorial. it's like going fishing with a brother or uncle who's trying to teach you how to fish for the first time.

  • Just a quick advice man! Mountain vlogs were the ones that made you viral and famous. Keep doing the out on the woods vlogs. I personally always wait for this kind of vlogs bro. Just being honest I don’t watch your ocean vlogs cuz they r just boring out there in the ocean but anytime you post a vlog in the mountains I go ahead and watch it in full. Please keep doing them much. Keep up the good work buddy

  • Rooster tail w a gold swivel I always use. Always hit. Bait kaster all chrome hits good too. So noobs need to know what kind of hooks are allowed. Each river has its own set. No snelled and no treble hooks. The fish and game in ca are so strict especially in small creeks in small mountain towns. Just looking out!

  • The spinners will absolutely knot your line without a good swivel. Swivels with ball bearings are ideal. Panther Martin has a double bladed spinner out that works really well, especially trolling, but will 100% twist and knot your line without a good swivel. Spend a couple extra bucks, save time on the water and the aggravation of knots.

  • If you use fluorocarbon I recommend putting the spool(just the spool) in warm/hot water for about 10 minutes to give the line some new “memory”. Monofilament is great for using bait with a fluorocarbon leader. Mono doesn’t have a sink rate like fluorocarbon does so you’re less likely to have snags.

  • If you are going to be traveling unknown forest roads be ready. I try to warn people how brutal it can be getting stuck, too many people have the "it'll never happen to me" mindset without even having the experience of changing a flat tire on gravel road. I don't warn people for no reason, here is my list of stuff I have constantly loaded in my 2015 Kia Soul, I have more equipment in my truck. 6k cal of food and 4 days of water (that becomes 2 days with 2 people), a change of clothes, a knife, a way to make fire, a blanket or 2, a towel to dry off, a saw, an axe, a manual style winch that is rated for at least double your vehicle weight, 3 times the flat tow line you think you need, a couple d-rings for rigging, a car jack, a tarp, hammock, extra hammock ropes (that I've had to use to get my car out more than once), and a bug net. Edit: 18" x 42" piece of 5/8 ply wood for a fast table top to not lose equipment or cutting board for the catch, I put it on top of the spare tire in my trunk. I also have 4 fishing rods and a backpack full of fishing gear in my car but that's the reason I get stuck, not to help me get out.

Be prepared people but don’t go beyond your ability, no amount of supplies will save you from over playing your hand. If in doubt travel out! Leave the sketchy stuff to the locals.
