I feel like Monfils struggles because he has too many options. If he plays very aggressively and then makes an error, it feels like a waste of his speed. If he stays back and retrieves, it feels like a waste of his striking power. tough to navigate these decisions during pressure moments in a match.

that first set is everything we've wanted from monfils for so long. tough to keep up that aggression though. maybe, as he get's older, he might be forced to go to this style of play more and more often. a guy can hope haha

I do wonder what a monfils who focused on offense would look like. I wonder why he defaults to pure defense when the pressure is on. Does he really have that little confidence in his strokes? he always looks absolutely terrified that he will hit an unforced error during important moments of the match. If he used that amazing speed and athleticism to just get to every ball as early as possible and then setup and take a huge swing at it, I feel like he would have so much success...but then maybe not. maybe he really is just going to hit it out all the time and he knows it. still, I would like to see it. a man can dream.

I personally think one simple idea Monfis would have done was not to give too much forehands to Berretini. He lit blats his forehand side. But Monfis kept on giving forehands instead making him to play his backhand.

Ma quali sceneggiate..Gael è uno dei tennisti più corretti del circus e lo dimostra il saluto finale tra i due a fine match...è ovvio che si incitava durante il match ma mi sa che di tennis ci capisci popo un cazzo
