Hong Kong Muay Thai fighter Yu Yau-pui has earned a US$100,000 main roster ONE Championship contract, becoming the first local fighter to compete in the Asian martial arts promotion. To get there, the 30-year-old fought many battles along the way - including an eating disorder, dropping out of university and family opposition. In this episode of Listen to Her, Post editor Regina de Luna meets Yu to learn some moves, but also to learn about her inspiring journey as a female fighter in Hong Kong.

  • Wow, as an Asian, I know the magnitude of her sacrifice to not go to university and to follow her dreams. So, so happy for her to see her succeeding and living her life to her full potential.

  • Actually, a background in dancing would transfer very well into martial arts as it helps in balance, flexibility and agility. She might want to have a backup plan for a long-term career as most fighters peak out in their 30s (rarely some can make it into their 40s). A backup plan could be becoming a fight or stunt coordinator in the movie industry or becoming a teacher in martial arts. It’s very admirable that she follows her passion.

  • In the past that would be foolish. Nowadays she is taking a calculated risk and doing the right thing. Graduates are everywhere nowadays and not every company is a super enterprise paying top dollars for graduates and all the peanut butter companies who cannot pay well still want graduates anyway. Each year china produce roughly 10 millions graduates.India also the same. There are countless countries after these 2 as well. Studies can be pick back up at anytime. But your physical peak and youth won't be around forever and if you can find a entry into mma and made a name for yourself you should do what your heart tell you to.

  • As a Muay Thai practitioner myself, congratulations on winning the contract. However, I do not agree with her style of fighting as it will only lead to worse damages as she progresses. Then what? Retire and spend all the money on treating the injuries? Time to either change the trainer or risk lingering damage down your life.

  • Media always made a general highlight on people who give up studies to work instead as though it is bad or worthy of attention without realizing the depreciation value of a cert. Also readers need to think broader and understand every one is different from ourselves. Some people need money urgently at a particular moment in time and have to put a pause on stufies or people might be rich and with or without studies it won't affect them at all etc. We need to be more flexible and broader in our thinking and also less hiss when knowing people are stopping uni to do other things in life.

    • @@Mudshovel-xx6sekung fu is a philosophy, it's a fluid system which has evolved over thousands of years. That means when a new thing that works, it's incorporated that's why so many styles exists. Secondly Kungfu also focus a lot of weapons because it was used in wars, so lot of focus is on spear, swords and other Chinese styles weapons. Which is of no use in competitions today. So hand to hand no weapon combat is just one aspect of let's say Wudang wushu. And it has so many variations, many are meant for self defense, some for fights it also greatly depends on what a student has learnt. It's a complicated world. It works or doesn't work is an not realistic or sufficient explanation.
