  • A tip that helps for me is if I am going to do the 1v1, I say to myself I am going to get around this player. This builds up your confidence which helps you have an attacking first touch, building speed because you will not back down, you will get around them. And once you decide your going to get around them you don’t hesitate and rethink your decision. Even if they stop you it’s way better than hesitating and getting tackled and falling on your face.

  • it's also helpful to change your direction as soon as the defender gets ready to make him think you won't dribble at him. Yes this means you aren't going directly to the goal. But the defender often will retreat because it looks like you aren't trying to dribble him but another defender. As soon as the defender makes the retreat you change direction and pace and he's unprepared and of position. Messi did this a lot.

It is also a good strategy to draw in defenders, having the hesitated moment to wait for the tackle, then you immediately flee away to get rid of them. • the most common issue I see with players 1v1 is that they ALWAYS hold the ball up. You can slow down play if you're waiting for supporting attackers or if you're in a tiny space and need to bait the defender in. But if you're on a break and then you slow the ball down to do some silly step over combination, STOP. Either use a change of pace or quick change of direction and keep moving at speed. When you slow the ball down, you not only make it easier for the defender marking you, but you ALSO let all the opposing defense get back into position. Stop doing this

    • 1. good 1st touch to set yourself up correctly. 2. build up speed. use all the momentum and speed against a defender. this is hard for them to read you. dribble towards them them with speed. 3. do not hesitate. always know what you wanna do before u get the ball. be bold. 4. dont do the faint too late or too early. 5. adapt. if you mess up, you get back up and go again. try different techquines and throw it at the defender to make you unpredictable.

  • Disagree with pretty much every one of these (except #5). These are old school winger tips. But if you are a close-control through-the-middle player, it's about close control, being able to change direction when you see a defender commit, acceleration (not pace). Messi's 1v1 skill wasn't primarily his pace but his balance, close control, and being able to change direction on a dime and move away from where the defender was going.
