First Time Campervanning in a VW CampAway
For the first time ever, we take a VW Camper for a trip away. How did we get on? What did we get wrong? What did we learn?
In this vlog we take a VW CampAway, leant to us by Broadlane Leisure, on a short trip. It was a whole new experience and something Jules had always wanted to do. We learnt a lot about Campervanning quite quickly and in this vlog you will see how we got on. We spent the first night at Somers Wood Caravan Park in Warwickshire. Thank you to Simon for assisting with the drone footage.
You can hire a VW CampAway from Broadlane from £90 a night to try it yourself if you are thinking of buying a camper.
This content was not paid for or sponsored financially by Broadlane and they have had no overview of the content we have produced. This is our experience..

    • The older you get, the more difficult camper vans become but are the best of all in camping in more inaccessible remote places like the Highlands.

  • Lots of what you’ve said is so true. It’s a great vid. Things like storage *really* depend on the individual configuration; some have sprung mattresses etc and really good sleeping bags are a must. I think the main thing to realise is it’s not a Motorhome it’s a CAMPervan, it really is a half way house between tent and Motorhome. For me/ us the pros far outweigh the cons - the cons can all be dealt with, we can’t fill ours there’s so much space (LWB admittedly) and the diesel heater, or little electric one on hook up is a marvel; the joy of driving and ease of parking makes holidaying as stress free an adventure as possible, especially compared to towing and set up we’ve got down to 7mins from handbrake on to kettle on and feet up 😂 However, as you say it’s a learning curve and different things appeal to different folks - what a good thing that is 😊

    • Thank you for watching and absolutely..there is always something for everyone and as I always say, there is always a compromise. I think a diesel heater would be better for me in a camper as I like to be out all year round and I do feel the cold. We really enjoyed the camper experience..happy travels to you and have a fantastic weekend 😊😊

  • We are relative newbies also, having tented and caravaned previously. We noticed slight differences. 1. Deisel heater is so easy and stops work before the fuel tank empties. 2. Pop top with the rear scissor action lifts the rear sufficiently. 3. True clothes storage is limited but recognising the unused clothes during the stay can direct the amount of clothes required. The under bed storage draws can be huge . 3. Replacing the passenger chair with a swivelling captains chair allows both chairs to be rotated without leaving the comfort of the vehicle. Be mindful of placing chocks under the front wheel if the handbreak is released. 4. An awning attached to the vehicle, especially a driveway air tube type improves longer stays. 5. A portaloo is essential for the freedom the camper gives you, especially when caught short when away from facilities. A toilet tent is a good addition when sited. 6. Camper is ideal for the days. out with easy parking in multi storey carparks with the standard height vw.

    @philhooper2522@philhooper2522 Жыл бұрын
    • Thank you for watching and for adding your insight as a new campervanner. The consensus seems to be that diesel is a better heating system to gas. I think a portaloo would be something I would prefer and I know you can get models that have these, and even a fixed loo. The camper has many postive points too, parking is certainly one of them. You make a good point about height barriers. Enjoy your camper and safe travels 😊😊

Storage was ok but the rock and roll bed was a bit cosy . A wind out awning is extremely useful and a small tent / lockable box is great for putting extras in . 😊

  • We enjoyed this, we used to have a VW ocean which had better storage than the one you tested. However you highlighted the issues with space & comfort upstairs that not even Duvalay could fix with our bad backs. We now have a 6m van, no more Tetris & having a fixed bed & on board facilities feels like we’ve won the lottery 😂

  • We bought a camper van first and still have a 70 reg lwb model. It is good for getting to places a motor home and caravan struggle with whilst continuously touring in one direction. Added to this we have just bought a caravan and we have found that it best for a base site holiday for comfort and ease after being pitched. They both have their merits and problems. I wouldn't buy a motorhome though, they seem to be a jack of all trades but master of nothing, particularly not being able to park at attractions and shops etc. We always carry a portable toilet in ours, inside a cover with a foam pad under the lid. When not in use it makes a perfect footstool or extra seat. It conveniently bungees to the passenger seat frame whilt the van is in motion. As far as the amount of storage and access to storage goes in a camper van, the type of bed you have can make a big difference. A rib bed, instead of a rock n roll bed, allows you to store outside gear inside the back door on the floor and the rear bed leaf horizontal, allows you to store bedding, coats and clean stuff there. Access beneath a rib bed is also much easier with just the lift of the seat leaf only in day mode or opening the front access doors. As well as this, you sleep on the flat reverse sides of each leaf, instead of a more sculptured sitting seat face, as is the case with a rock n roll bed. I personally would always go for a lwb van but if you use it as a daily driver, perhaps more convenient parking would be more important to you, with a short van but I haven't really found a lwb van bad for parking anyway but I have a reversing camera, which helps a lot. A lwb van has greater storage as well, mine has high level cupboards from the back, all the way to the drivers seat and there is high level storage all the width of the back as well and access to the roller shutter doors is immediately accessible as well with a lwb van. On a night, all the bedding goes on the bed and other clean stuff stored during the day on the rear bed leaf, then goes in the driver's seat, overnight and returns back again, when you make the bed in the morning. A good diesel heater is a must, we have a Webasto and we have never had problems with it feeling cold and we campervan in the winter as well, if left on all night. When left on all night, you can't detect any change on the van diesel fuel gauge because the diesel heater is efficient and hardly uses much diesel. I am 6 foot tall but thin and atheletic. Perhaps camper vans are for younger people. After all i am only 64 lol. When the wife and I are on our own, we always shut the pop top and sleep downstairs on the rib bed on top of a memory foam topper, partucularly in winter. I am an old man and need a no1 about 3 times every night and with the portable toilet, it is no problem.

    • Thank you for leaving such an informative comment Steve, it is helpful to us and also others who are considering a camper. It sounds like a little bit more length in the LWB gives you the added space and storage. Interesting about the diesel heater too. Thank you very much 😊

A diesel heater for chilli eves and morns. (Remote fob if in poptop bed. Defo a porta potti. A storage bag on the bike rack. And the biggy. A rib bed. It's further forwards in the van but loads more storage and the rear cupboard is accessible. Also a fiamma safari room is a massive must. Up in minutes and makes all the difference with space and with the diesel heater on its toasty in the tent small table and chairs. Perfect... Ive rambled on enough I think😂. 👍🏼

  • Great video Karina & Jule's. We have a campervan & i'm writing a feature at the moment on packing tips for having a campervan on my website. Pack light. We have those packing cube's & they are great. Don't take too much stuff, only take what you need. Only take food for the first few nights, plan your meals & there is always a supermarket or farm shop near by. And a takeaway place not far away who may deliver. We don't sleep in the poptop the rock & roll bed is so much more comfy. We have an onboard toilet because I couldn't be getting out the van during the night to use the campsite toilet. We have the heating on all night if we need it & bringing the poptop down during the winter nights does make the inside a lot warmer. An awning is a must to give more living space for eating in or seating in during the day or evening & we do have heating for our awning too. Hope that helps anyone thinking of buying a VW campervan. That is a vw campervan and a caravan 😂😂 we use them both equally in different circumstances and for different purposes. I surprised myself with the vw to be honest. I love it! We do 2 to 3 nights in it but if we fancy more room or luxury then we tow the caravan. However I would'nt like it without my portapotty 😮 or an electric heater/diesel heater.

  • Thanks for a great video! We hired a Motorhome last year but decided to keep with our caravan. However we now tow it with a Mercedes Marco Polo campervan! Have the best of both. An important thing to check is the overall height of a campervan including its canopy, some vw's are just over 2 metres high. And lots if height barriers are only 2 metres. PS we have room for a Portapotty in ours!

  • This was a good review. Reviewers normally gloss over the more practical aspects of a van, so e.g. they never tell you the downstairs bed is only 112cms wide, what it's like sleeping on the thin mattresses upstairs, and tricks about using the limited storage in a pop-top. And they always assume owners are fit, svelte and tiny. Glad to see an honest appraisal by a bigger bloke, as so many of us are these days. Never stand on the front seat armrest to get into the upstairs bed btw. They tend to break easily, and you could have a nasty fall.

Our porta potty fits perfectly at the end of the bed downstairs. Plus plenty of clever storage throughout. We sacrifice internal space for incredible flexibility, but we haven't compromised on comfort. I usually sleep better in the van than at home. Duvalay all the way.

  • Hi, as you noticed, a lot of cleverness has gone into this compact camper, with >60yrs of design experience. All this in just shy of 5m, if, like yours, it is the SWB. Practically turns on the spot. Many 3 point turns are often 2 pointers or occasionally simply in one go. It is the go anywhere, park anywhere camper. Yes, the toilet takes getting used to, but is only really a bother in the rain. For anyone reading this, please do not use the armrest to stand on, when climbing up - can have horrific consequences, injury, or costly to repair. Either make it in one go or invest in a foldable ladder. Californiabits do one, that goes nicely in between the two front seats (we have two single seats, which not only has space for the ladder, but for many other things, including a convenient way to go from front to back, without going outside. We have plenty of storage for 2wk holidays for 3 people (son is 6' 2" and sleeps up top). I am 6' 1" and happily sleep below. You just need to be smart in what you take, although any winter holidays may involve the odd trip to the laundrette. As for general space, at minimum any one with these should get a 'awning room', which simply are 3 tent type walls, that zip to the awning arms and front rail and then velcro to each other to create a weather proof enclosure, the size of the full awning, with windows and a door. If away for longer or 3 / 4 people, then drive away Awning tents are fab...unzip and nip into the village or town for some sighseeing...and keep relative inexpensive things in there, table, chairs etc.. As for your cold night, we have a wrap-around thermal that covers the entire canvas of the pop top and includes openers for the front window. Great vlog and you never know, you might just be persuaded.🤔

A two berth caravan or 2 berth motorhome will probably give more comfort for less outlay. I have seen quite a few camper van setups onsite and the most enthusiastic of the couple is always the man. In other news, it's probably good for cutting down on evening drinking due to the amount of faffing involved in simply going to bed. I'll keep our twin axle, fixed bed, I think. I'll get my coat🙂

  • I’ve just converted a high roof Transit Custom on a real budget for a guy who has been homeless living in a caravan for the past 18 months. Done very much on a budget. It’s just him and his dog. Unfortunately all his worldly possessions have to be carried too. It’s been highly successful BUT a lot depends on how many people are going to be living in it. You have a 4 berth camper van and only two of you in it. Imagine 4 people in that. He is on his own which meant that we could make it with a fixed single bed with caravan style cushions as mattress/seats, a kitchen with a dual burner camping stove, a diesel heater, 12v & 240v electrics but no water supply either fresh or waste fixed into the van. For a single person (and his border collie)it’s ideal with lots of space, lots of power options, good storage under the full length bed/seat and good, relatively inexpensive heat but only for one person. I could have built a rock&roll bed if there were two people but storage would have been reduced and it would have been more cramped were two to be in it. My point is that there is no one size fits all solution especially in a medium sized van such as this. Great video and wonderful to see you back online by the way.

Where do you put bedding for 4? It's very stylish, lots of headroom and floor space, but otherwise bloody useless. We have had a Vivaro for 8 years and have had 300+ comfortable days and nights with plenty storage. Cost £6k in total. I might call ours Campaway, the one good thing. Don't be so hard on yourself, this is not a great van, its not a 4 berth its a 2+2 kids. They should have told you that, especially with a guy that size. Campers are warmer than motorhomes, less air to heat up and insulation is good. Conclusion if you are going to pay £50-60k for a posh camper get a motorhome and some bikes.

    • @@HereWeTow You really are a poor representative of your company. I plan to buy in the near future. It will not be from your company. You just lost a customer.

    • @jenniferbringman9054 I don’t sell anything, I think you misunderstand what I do… good luck in your camper search. I can suggest several companies who do sell campers if you need any independent advice 👍
