ABOUT THIS VIDEO
Rob Rosen and I talk to Mike about a number of subjects including his: studio layout, synth set up, approach to creating synth music, live performance concepts and I'll even jump into a few live jams with Mike. Whether you're a seasoned pro or just starting out, this is an opportunity you won't want to miss if you have even a passing interest in contemporary music.
Mike is best known for his synthesizer-heavy instrumentation, songwriting and audio mixing for high-profile music industry artists including The Weeknd, Beyoncé, Kanye West, Kid Cudi, Travis Scott, Jay-Z, Drake, Madonna, Selena Gomez, and Lana Del Rey, among others. Also, Mike was the opening act for The Weeknd's "The After Hours til Dawn Tour", performing live at stadiums on multiple synthesizers.
As a solo artist, Mike has released a series of critically acclaimed studio albums each showcasing his distinctive style and innovation: 4:20 (2020), 4:22 (2021), Smoke State 42222 (2022), 4:23 (2023), and most recently 424 (2024). He's a true pioneer shaping the sound of modern music and a trailblazer across genres.

ABOUT ANTHONY
Anthony's musical touch as both composer and performer is connected with some of the most influential creative minds over the last 40 years. He’s composed and conducted original orchestral scores for over 80 feature films including Young Guns , Internal Affairs , The Man From Elysian Fields , 15 Minutes and Planes, Trains & Automobiles , been commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic for his symphonic work "In the Family Way", written over one thousand TV commercials in a myriad of musical styles, co-founded Levels Audio Post (LA's premiere post production facility) and performed and arranged on big-box-office films and influential hit records such as Michael Jackson's Thriller .
His extensive work as a young arranger, orchestrator and performer for Quincy Jones , Jack Nitzsche , Lamont Dozier , Arthur Rubenstein and Giorgio Moroder was vital in launching his own career. His early years pioneering modular analog synthesizers along with his wide-ranging music scholarship positioned Anthony at the center of the music technology revolution. • Of course he was impressed and asked questions. Mike knows exactly who Anthony is and just how important Anthony's contributions are to the shape and sound of modern music. But yeah, I totally agree, it was super cool to see that look from Mike over to Rob and Rob's just like, uh yeah, that's it ,told ya! And then... Mike just totally takes quartal and quintal harmony and immediately understands and uses it because he's Mike Fucking Dean!!!! Damn! Great Vid!

  • And this is why analog will never die. You can't walk into a room of plugins. You can't mod a plugin. You can't get two sets of hands on a plugin. So good. Thank you for sharing.

    @CoopMusic247@CoopMusic24714 күн бұрын
    • Saving your presets, isn't that pretty much modding a plugin? Also, you can control the plugin with two sets of hands. Midi controller+DAW is pretty much a synth. But I get what you're saying. There's no magic to a DAW.

      @rallerallesson408@rallerallesson40812 күн бұрын
    • @@rallerallesson408 I don't see that as a mod, but yeah you could hack the code. It's not the same though. And you gotta midi map all that stuff to something analog even with a digital connection involved, so still analog in my book.

      @CoopMusic247@CoopMusic24712 күн бұрын
    • Good point. A simple way to have 2 midi keyboards go to 2 different plugins without spending too much time so you don't lose momentum. That would go a long way.

      @2face789@2face78912 күн бұрын
    • And I definitely run two different synths on different keyboards at once in the daw, but theres only so much you can map too. There's a mini keyboard I like to use because of a flaw it has where you can get a double note from tapping it a certain way. Cant map that really either. But hey I love plugins too. They aint going nowhere either.@@2face789

  • Man, this reminds me of my hippy friends in their housetrucks and particularly Mole and Will who had multiple synthesizors at the top of Rama Rama Rd, the epic journeys we'd create after a few bongs and maybe some shrooms just like the man said with all sorts of other instruments of course like my flutes and him on guitar and sometimes his wife singing...Cosmic voyages into sonic landscapes with sounds that the slightest turn of a knob morph into other dimensions.

Other than that he seems to be in a near-vegetative state. Fascinating! Great video. I look forward to part two with great anticipation.

I had no idea Jimmy Jam made a F ton of my core musical knowledge as well as you Anthony. Most of the Cartoons i saw in the 80s you made the themes or worked on the songs in shows. If i saw you in public the 5 year old me would hug you in Joy for all the happiness you gave me with all the music you have been a part of. SYNTHS , music electronic music. We all have this devotion to out passion of music. We all seek comradery from our peers, knowledge and wisdom and sick tones from our music. Many have talent, few have passion. • This seems like a basic format that could really grow. It would be amazing to see a series, that uses rotating artists and a rotating host, some one who knows both the artists and can facilitate the conversation. Perfect model to crate awesome crossovers. Ultimately a show that pairs producer musicians who have truly shaped the iconic sounds of popular and underground music. This model is awesome, no bullshit. Having a facilitator is key to making it work. Two icons listening, learning, teaching, sharing with each other and then making some awesome shit together and then an outro conversation as the night cap. The pool of musicians would be pretty large. I could imagine pairing Herbie Hancock and Four Tet to see what happens when their creative forces join. Or Brian Eno and Terry Riley. Or Robert Glasper and Louis Cole. Keep it informal, smoke and drink or whatever, and keep it real. I bet almost every episode would be a master class like this one. This shit was beautiful.

  • I've bought two Moogs this year alone after being inspired by Mike. I got a Moog One and a Moog Matriarch. And will most likley be getting the Oberheim OB-6 later this year. Alongside my other hardware gear and finally getting out of the Army, my productions have went to another level. I mix and master my own stuff at my new home production studio. I've waited almost 20 years to have what I now consider my dream studio. Hope to work with him or meet him (Mike) someday, as I also live in Texas (DFW).
