This is the second throw down for a lump charcoal champion! In this video, we put BLUES HOG v FOGO v HUMPHREY v JEALOUS DEVIL!! BBQ iT is testing to see what's actually in the bag: tons of rock, pieces too big? Then we get to see who burns the hottest, and the longest. The top 2 in this video will face the top 2 in the first video, and the top 2 in the next video!

  • So great, Craig! Your first lump charcoal test was the first BBQ video I watched after I got my WSM on May 16. I couldn’t believe you lived in Gloucester because you didn’t seem like a Northeasterly type of guy! It’s been so fun getting into this helped along by your content. Your videos definitely are the most artistic and your youthful energy, humor and analytical mind are so infectious. I drive past Foster’s Grill Store every time I go to Good Harbor and feel like I’m passing a famous place! Something really powerful about this whole BBQ way. Going to join NEBS. Maybe that’s my new slogan...Slow down with the BBQ way. Thanks so much!

I'm fairly new to grilling and you did mention seasonal pricing, could you briefly expand on the best time to purchase lump...living in USA. I line the inside of my Weber Kettle with metal mesh to catch the gravel and burned pieces for the next fire.

    • @@blink555 I bought a 35lb bag in April, I think for $49.95 although I have lots of charcoal of different brands. So in late June I checked the price on Amazon and found the price had more than doubled. So I sent a email off to Jealous Devil and their response was that the price is controlled by market forces, and the were not going to refund money to me, which I never asked for. Right now I am burning a bag of B&B lump and have no complaints. I use a fine screen to catch small pieces in my Weber kettle, and achieve multiple burns with the same charcoal. Less I digress, I am new to grilling in a serious way and was wondering if pricing on charcoal is seasonal. Also with many people home cooking due to C-19 might have an effect on pricing. Happy grilling.

  • Just came across this 2 years later, great stuff!!! What I look for in lump is a long hot burn that is relatively spark and ash free. And wow, I wouldn't put Humphry's in any of my BBQs! Fogo was my go to for a long time, but their prices have gotten a little to much for me; but it's difficult to beat that long hot burn with so little spark and ash, great stuff!! I went Jealous Devil last year, and I have the say the chunks had this shine on it which made me believe it's sprayed with something, but the bag doesn't say. It burned the hottest/longest I've ever used, and it's the king of ash/spark free cooking.....once you get it going. It took waaaaay longer than usual to get my smoker up to temp, and tested my patience. More than once I opened the vents too much only to come back an hour later to a smoker 75 degrees too hot. I can't have that. Sorry Jealous Devil, you nearly had me. Your reaction when the string got pulled all the way out of the bag was hilarious! I do a little dance myself when that happens! I look forward to your next vid, I want to try more American lump.

I also like B&B for the same reason, not much flavor from the charcoal more flavor from the meat and wood.

    • DEAD on!! Yes, the JD doesn't add a ton off flavor in general I feel. Or at least it didn't seem to. I LOVE B&B for that exact reason you mentioned, it SMELLS AMAZING!! And yes it adds flavor. Me and my boys always trip when I light up B&B lump or briquettes, it's always an amazing smokey-oaky-campfire-ready-to-cook vibe! Thanks for the SUB btw!!

  • The Humphreys is spitting alot but there ain't much in the chimney... the BB lump will spit like that too even filled up if the peices are bulky and there is a lot of air in between the lumps.

  • I have used Fogo and JD.....and a few others....Fogo Premium (black bag) is ok but I always get unburnt pieces.....not thrilled about that.... it's big bag brother (Fogo Super Premium) I like better....burns better but has bigger chunks than I like for my PBC basket. JD is not as hot for me as everyone seems to get but it burns more consistent and all ash after a long cook......but not impressed with the flavor coming off it. I've just got B&B Lump and Briquettes and am going to give them a try since just about every charcoal review site raves about B&B.........now promise you won't take AGES to do Part 3&4.....lol

    • Ok, that was an amazing comment! Sorry I missed getting back. Dead on with your comment on the coals in general. You'll LOVE the B&B smell and flavor for sure!!! Every time I light it up I'm amazed at it's aroma and flavor. Every damn time. Oh hey KVIDS, subscribe and ring a bell, the next video comes out this week!!! • @@BBQiT your not going to believe this but...... Jealous Devil's new product, Pillow Briquettes hits it out of the park..... imagine this, a Briquette twice the size of B&B.....nearly no broken ones in the bag or dust at all, bag after bag, low ash, clean burning, did I say fricking BIG. Long.....long burns.....I cooked a Brisket for 18 hours on my PBC without adding fuel😳.....they burn hot and clean..... Amazon them, get some, throw it into you test challange video........ I'll NEVER use another type of Briquette again!.....never.......did I say their BIG?...😳😮

  • Where is part 3 and 4? It has been a year since part two. But with that aside, I live in Canada and we don't get a ton of charcoal love. We have Canadian Maple hardwood charcoal and I think Oak. But I have never seen any of the premium charcoal brands that aren't big names like Green Egg or Komado Joe. I run Kingsford briquettes most of the time since they are pressed tightly and don't crumble apart like Royal Oaks briquettes. I have some Napoleon Black Stone coconut charcoal logs. They last forever and are a really solid shape for ground out charcoal powder compared to briquettes. I don't like that after taste it leave though so it just sitting in my closet. I think I am going to use it for a little asian charcoal style grill
