Welcome to another episode of Marathon Training in Kenya with Luis Orta! This year we bring you a ton of great new content from the Home of Champions: Iten, Kenya! In this season, we meet up with some of the huge groups that train together in Iten, joining them on long runs, medium long runs, fartleks, track workouts, easy runs, and more! We have some special guests, including Olympic medalist Paul Chelimo who was born and raised in Iten.
Today we're at the legendary Tambach dirt track outside of Iten with local native Paul Chelimo. Paul is an American track and field athlete, taking the silver medal in the 5K in the 2016 Olympics and bronze in 2020. Luis and his pacers team up with Paul to take on a world class workout. This one is a sufferfest!
Luis also gets the chance to meet the Godfather of Kenyan running, Brother Colm O'Connell. O'Connell is an Irish missionary and athletics coach who showed up in Kenya in 1976, originally for a 3 month mission trip, but he never left. His students include Edna Kiplagat, Florence Kiplagat, Lornah Kiplagat, Linet Masai, Mary Keitany, Ibrahim Kipkemboi Hussein, Peter Rono, Matthew Birir, Sammy Tirop, Haron Lagat, Janeth Jepkosgei, Viola Kibiwott, Brimin Kipruto, Joseph Tengelei, Isaac Songok, Wilson Boit, Vivian Cheruiyot, Michael Kipyego, Augustine Kiprono Choge, Wilson Kipketer and David Rudisha. Despite having no coaching background, he has a skill for identifying talent and helping those athletes achieve their highest level, which has been a multitude of world champions.
Thanks for watching!

  • Those are a good and wise set of words spoken by the Track & field coach: Colm O'Connell at 17:31, of the above posted video. Its important to also add to that same conversation; that the main role of a proper Track & field coach: is also to try to prevent the occurrence of any unnecessary training dilemma; to to any already committed and talented athlete engaged with the Track & field sports activity.
