  • A better translation offered by a bilingual speaker of both S Korean and English (me!): "At the edge and the 'corner' of the world, there was a troublesome outsider who grew up to a 'crooked posture' (so she/he is not "normal" due to her/his 'crooked posture' plus the 'corner' where this person lives can mean a peripheral setting, again not a mainstream, common scene.) Her(his) walk, (her)his style, and even the music that she(he) listens were all off and weird. ('Minor' in this lyrics means a weird/unpopular taste in Korean. So IU means that this person only listens to the music that not many other people listen to.) You dont know where the light is spotlighting (she means that the light is shedding on 'you', while you think differently because you think of yourself very low due to other people's judgy gazes) because you dropped your head down (because this person is always treated as a weirdo, she/he is always not confident; this person can't literally keep her/his head up because she/he needs to escape from other people's hatred and also because she/he lacks confidence since she/he was constantly treated as "troublesome" person). It is fine if you take your time (to realize that you are my one and only star/celebrity) slowly, but I hope you realize one day that you are my one and only celebrity." So, some S Koreans are cautiously assuming that maybe the first inspiration of this lyrics came from IU's love toward her lovely best friend Sulli (IU had written a song for Sulli too in the past--it is "peach" in Korean) who was always judged for her weirdness (her unique clothing style, her unique choice of music, her unique selfie style, etc etc..). In her official description of this song, IU wrote in Korean that while writing the lyrics for this song, she first thought of her loving friend (although she didnt specify who) who, according to IU's album description had "unique and weird clothing styles, a bit of a weird preference, diverse talents, defensive behaviors coming from innate shyness, and strong arguments", and that she wrote it to support her because "she love this friend of hers due to the listed weirdness" while this friend had to "endure hatred for being who she/he is". But then when she finished writing the lyrics, she wrote that she realized that this song was not only about her friend but also about herself. Furthermore, among S koreans' community, Koreans are discussing that they felt consoled by her lyrics because the audience of her lyrics can be expanded from IU herself and her friend to anyone who listens to this song. Because interpreted generally, the message of the lyrics is "its OK for you to be you because in my eyes, you are my one and only unique star, a shining celebrity." Left-handed people are also often deemed to be 'different' and 'outsider' in many cultures. Scissors, doors, and many things are made for right-handed people because right-handedness is more socially acceptable "norm" and majority's habit. She is giving encouraging messages to those people who are like 'left-handed'. Thats why she wrote the word celebrity with her left hand. It represents the uniqueness of the left-handed people or unique people in general and her intention to show that although the letters that she wrote (or people in general) do not look like they are either polished or neat, they are still shining for them being themselves, like "weirdo"es who might seem not polished and not neat in some people's eyes because it is what makes them special, by just being themselves. She wants people to know that whenever they feel like weirdoes who are yet afraid to endure the judgy gaze of society, they are unique and precious, and even more, can be daringly called IU's celebrity. +) thanks for appreciating my work! As a native Korean speaker, I find Korean language often very poetic and that it summarizes so many contexts and cultural meanings in a short phrase or few words. That's why I decided to break down the lyrics! This is basically how the lyrics is heard in the ears of native Korean listener/speaker! IU forever! +) I will do my best to translate/explain other parts too in several days. Just wait with some patience! I love you and thank you! +) In the MV, IU is using her another identity(이지동) (check her Instagram post which she is asking "이지동씨..?" as the caption under her photo) which is the less socially representable or less mainstream version of her while her real name is 이지은. In Korean and Chinese character system, 은(銀) means silver and 동(銅) means bronze. And in many cultures, bronze is often deemed as a lower-tier than silver. So by this analogous name, where she represents less-"celebrity"-like herself as bronze(이지동), she is showing that there is a version of herself that she also finds 'weird' or 'off-the-tase-of-the-public', but in the MV, as you see, IU keeps running with her perfect celebrity look to find her another self 이지동 who is more free-spirited than her and who is weirder and more minor in terms of fashion and attitude. IU does not even try to hide her another 'minor' self 이지동(bronze) from her "celebrity" fame or to hate her another self, but rather she runs with a determined mind to catch her and to talk to her, basically to find and face her and love her. You can see how much IU loves her another self 이지동(bronze) through IU acting like a spy to spot 이지동(bronze IU) and running in the middle of celebrity photoshoot to run into 이지동(bronze IU). Why? because not only publicly-likeable-IU but also another self of hers(이지동) is also "my one and only celebrity". So her analogy applies not only to her 'friend' mentioned in the album description but also to herself, mainly observed in MV too. FYI, about this MV interpretation, this KZheadr's interpretation is a bit different from mine in details but the basic assumption that this MV is analogous by showing two different versions of IU to prove IU's message that every singular person is a shining celebrity just for being themselves is pretty much similar to mine. SO I am giving her the link as the credit. I also want this creator's work to be appreciated too. You don't need jewelry, a perfect face, and fancy clothes--you need you to be "the one and only celebrity"

  • "You're a star painted with a left hand" I feel extremely overwhelmed, I never knew that I would get this comfort because of a song. Just imagine drawing something with your less dominant hand. A crooked, less precise, and at some point not really visually appealing, then somebody will say that no matter what your flaws are. You are unique, you are loved, you are valued beyond your expectation. That I value you and appreciate your existence. Even if you don't see your value, you don't see your beauty I see it, so be kind to yourself each individual has their time to bloom. It maybe not yet for you however your time will come, you will bloom prettier than the prettiest flower out there. lets all be appreciative of others uniqueness :)

  • MV in the beginning she’s being all taken care of and everyone is going around putting on makeup for her and taking pictures, and then she sees the “old her”, before she was a huge celebrity, she sees her old self at a cafe and looks through the window, in disguise from her fans, wishing to go back when times were simpler, she starts to feel down until she sees the “old her” again, and as she runs to go back in time (by chasing her old self), she runs into a mirror, realizing she’s still the same IU from 2009 and there is no “old IU”, it’s all just her, and she feels comforted and like herself again.

  • i feel like the mv is about the idol/celebrity losing their true self while trying to be perfect to the public's eyes, IU was trying to find the "other girl" and in the end while trying to chase her again she looks in the mirror and found out that she, herself was the person she was looking for this whole time. and in the end it's just her enjoying herself and being free. hwhwhwh was that weird?   • its hard to believe she is still a secret in many areas of the world, I found her by accident over 3 yrs ago, my friends only know her because of me raving (sorry, 'raving' = meant talking about her all the time)... I can only guess that she is purposely not wanting to go worldwide and wants the option of traveling through other parts of the world as a regular person (as she did in the U.S. and Italy with Yoo In Na), no bodyguards, no one needing her attention. She's truly the best in the world.

  • She break the stereo type of every song about celebrity or artist. Instead of telling everyone what the life of celebrity is, and hope some fans understand what it really likes to be like them, she made a song to convey a message to all artist thats its okay to be different, its okay to be not always in the trend, and its okay to take time.   • In my interpretation those lyrics aren't only aimed at fellow idols but also all people in general: Many of us feel like shit about ourselves on a daily basis. Having widespread fame and a great career doesn't necessarily help with that. She tells us that it is the people close to us that see the aspects of ourselves we fail to recognize and love us because or despite of them. We may not be world renown but to those that truly love us "we are their celebrity". Realizing that and trying to see ourselves through their eyes can help us learn to love ourselves more. Until we can eventually say "You are my celebrity" to the person we see in the mirror. Like IU does towards the end of the MV.

  • I think the point of the song is about seeing yourself as a celebrity. Loving and admiring yourself like a celebrity. When you think of a celebrity, you usually follow their styles and wished that you are them, completely changing yourself without realizing that you are beautiful as you are. If you noticed the part (55 sec) where IU (all black outfit) saw IU (on the table in a simple dress) and she (black) was like stunned or was attracted to that girl in the table. 😅 Also, towards the end where she goes after someone but ending up in front of a mirror, then she smiled cause she realized she is her own celebrity. 😘😊❤ So you are beautiful because of your uniqueness. You shouldn't change yourself just because that is the beauty other wants or sees. Anyways, I'm not really sure if I'm getting it right. 😅 IU ❤❤

  • 근데 시간 진짜 빠르다 지금 중3인데 중1 처음 입학했을때 점심시간? 그쯤마다 이 노래 나왔는데 이 노래 들으면 그때 기억이 생각난다. 중1때 반배정이 좋은 편은 아니었는데 젊었을때라 더 기억나는듯
