Anyone fighting back the tears with Blackthorne? Just us?
Just you.
I really didn’t feel like they had much chemistry. Felt forced, like blackthorns voice

I really love how despite not appearing in the final episode, you can still feel Mariko's presence in how much she touched and was loved by every single character in the show. "Only her words remain with us now...but what a bonfire she made."

Yeah but that last episode was god awful. If you are going to conclude a show, have an actual conclusion.
She made Japan as we know it
Alvito was such an absolute bro. Very cool guy.
Honestly they made him more likable and complex than I thought, rather than just “evil stereotypical priest”
@@madtitan0825in orignal 1980s miniseries he's like mustache twirling evil guy. In this new series he has his religious beliefs but actually struggles to be a decent person.
I think of him as simply a priest, his superior officers are not tho
Well at the end, he was the only one who stood the test of his religion. He actually turned out to be a decent honourable catholic, unlike his friends

The moment when Blackthorn is realising how Mariko saved his life even after death and how he is leaving Osaka without her is the most heart-wrenching scene in the entire series. And the music... I can't...😢

Oh, boy! The buddy comedy to end all buddy comedies!!!
Absolutely stuck the landing with the final episode. This entire series was a masterwork.
Mariko's sacrifice and act of love to protect Blackhorne washed away the hate in his heart

She died so others can live, like the guy in the cross she was wearing. She even open her arms before the gate explosion as in a crucifixion.
The final episode of Shōgun is so emotional . The entire cast gives strong performances in this episode , I hope this series wins some Emmy awards ⚔️⚔️⚔️ .
It will. Don't worry.
emmys all around imho
My sentiment exactly. Everything was phenomenal - the sets to the costumes to the cinematography, but the actors brought it all together. The entire cast smoked it from major ones like Blackthorne, Toranaga & Lady Mariko to the major minor ones like Tommy Bastow as Father Alvito to Sinnosuke Abe as Buntaro & Tadanobu Asano as Yabushige. So good. If they don’t receive awards for their superlative work, it’ll be an epic travesty. 🙂👍
The heartbreaking subtleties of this scene of Anjin and Alvito in the woods - both loved Mariko/Maria in their separate ways, both had very deep affection for her; for Anjin, it was something akin to growing romantic love and perhaps even friendship as next to Yabushige, Mariko was the closest thing to a friend he had in Japan who didn’t predominantly see him as a well-liked but ultimately playable pawn as Toranaga saw him. For Alvito, there was what seemed a protective older brother’s love - something not lost in the cross that Alvito gave to a younger Mariko as a tether to keep her nearer to hope, and which interestingly became the token of grief and love that Anjin took from her dead body to remember her by (and which, heartbreaking detail, he was holding ever so tightly when he was quite ready to take his own life in protest of Toranaga’s putting the village to the sword). The two of them talking in the woods - Anjin and Alvito - is incredible as they’re both deeply mourning the same woman they loved - romantically for Anjin, brotherly/spiritually for Alvito, and in their shared grief something of a peace and almost brotherhood emerges. All possible because of the tragic loss of Mariko/Maria. Her presence over them, between them, within them in those woods is just - whoa.
I was super surprised with Alvitos honesty and how he kept his promise to Mariko tbh
Alvito was always honest. From the moment he translated his first words to Toranaga to the end of the show. It was Blackthorne war against the Catholics that blindsided him from seeing his true friend.
Both he and the head priest had more screen time in the books and the old show with the deviantion from the books being the cut between Blackthorne and the Captain Ferera but both clergymen were honest though stuck in the imperial ambition of Portugal and Spain even during the confirmation of the treaty father Aquina told the truth seeing that lying to the japanese were more harmful than good and that they kept their words even protecting Blackthorne in the book against the captain of the black ship.
His character was consistent from the beginning. He translated Blackthornes words truthfully, made the Catholics sit with Toranaga and honored Marikos final wish.
I think priest alvito was also in love with mariko
Because we are so used “”””Hollywood”””” making the holy man the bad guy, whose uses religion for his own selfish desires. That when they make a character who is genuinely religious and good we are surprised.
4:36 Cosmo Jarvis deserves more recognition for his great work as Blackthorne at Shogun.
AGREED!! I love his character! I think he did a fantastic job! The ENTIRE CAST WAS BRILLIANT!!!
Sorry, but I don't agree. He is pretty flat in his deliveries and voice tone. I almost gave up on watching the series because of how bad I felt his acting was.

Here we finally get to see just how deep that 14-year friendship b/t Mariko & Alvito really goes. Its clear Alvito is in mourning, & is honouring his friends memory through carrying out her final wish
The final section of this scene with the music and John's reaction has me in floods every time. This has got to be best show of 2024.
3:27 Alvito is not japanese but still Blackthorne bows to him, a suttle way of showing that Blackthorne is embracing the japanese culture more.
The person this character is based on, did embrace Japan. He even had a Japanese wife and children, he even cared enough to send money to is still wife and kids in Europe.
@@spencers4121 I know.
In the book, Alvito and Blackthorne simply shook hands, and parted, with mutual respect, in respect of Mariko...
@@richardruff8712 I got the book recently, can't wait to read it!
@@Nefelena Wow... Very nice... My version is the 1244 page Coronet paperback... Get settled down, as it may take a while to work through it... You will probably discover that this 2024 version, and the classic 1980 version, ( with Richard Chamberlain, etc ) is rather different to the book story... But, it is OK, the basic story remains the same... Good luck !
Mariko loved him deeply. The deal was her idea and she came up with it before they even left for Osaka. His life was so important to her that she made sure he was safe and protected even after her death. Just thinking about that makes me want to cry all over again.
This is why she held his finger when he asked her to consider living for him, he reciprocating without even knowing, lady Mariko spent her whole life being considerate to everyone for the greater of good for the realm, constant sacarfice, and anjin shows her worth in a simple line...the opposite of what she was striving for....
Alvito's last line made me cry😭😭😭
I want to hear Father Alvito's Gregorian chants again. It was my first experience with the Catholic worldview and it moved me deeply.
watch the movie silence
If you are talking about when he was praying to Mariko about her final rites, that's just the mass in Latin.
In a lot of ways I think Alvito was just trying to make the best of his circumstances and was honest in his missionary work. Him respecting Mariko's wishes sealed it for me. It's not his fault he was caught up in a global empire and more senior clergy basically wrote him off every time he tried to re-orient them to their mission to God.
Alvito is a missionary, not a fanatic, not a zealot.
@@SgtSplatter782A proper man of God.
This scene, for me, was the pinnacle of Episode 10. The nonsense of wars. Human beings that cannot tolerate the differences in such a matter that the other "must die". Followed by the dialogue between Yabushige and Toronaga. The smile of Toronaga, answering Yabushige at the very moment Yabushige is going.
First ballot straight into the Hall of Fame for BEST TV Show (Series). Thanks to everyone involved in the making of this series.
Blackthorne fighting back tears on the boat 🥲
The entire casts was incredible, but the fact that Tommy Bastow was able to shine in his scenes as Father Alvito speaks volumes of his work. He really exuded a decent Portuguese Catholic holy man who was caught between living the values of the church he believed with the real life politics of the country of Japan he was in that in essence challenged him. Also he really showed concern for Lady Mariko & decency with John Blackthorne. I mean the fact that Tommy had to do that haircut truly shows his dedication to the craft.😆🤣 And wow. That admission of Father Alvito who was a decent man at heart showing the power & grace Mariko had in this world was emotional. They crushed that scene. Anna Sawai’s performance as Mariko was so good you felt her presence in that scene. Cosmo showing all that emotion on his face was beautiful but heart breaking. I love that many mentioned Blackthorne’s bow of respect to Father Alvito. This finale was so good. I don’t know how they pulled it off. Everyone wanted a spectacular CGI battle but we amazing got calls, cutbacks, a flash forward, exposition, story telling & a dream within a dream; yet everyone freaking loved it. That is art. That is story telling. That is cinema or tv at its best hitting on all cylinders. If the show’s producers/show runners & actors don’t receive awards it’ll be a travesty.
Brilliant acting all around...
This scene hurts so much! Such good acting from everyone to camera shots and audio ambience!
Every clip I've watched of this series I've been above all amazed by the quality of the dialogues.
I want interviews with the actors who played Father Alvito and many other members of the cast.
There are a few on YT. He learned Japanese just for the show and went to live in a seminary. He took it serious.
a soundtrack and an actors performance portraying a man breaking apart had me and wife in full on tears, thats how you know a show is truely incredible.
Great performance by Jarvis
I'm gonna miss this show very much
このシーン泣いたよ。切なすぎるね
Close your eyes when Cosmo - Blackthorn talks. He sounds like Oliver Reed in Gladiator as Proximo. Cosmo is superb in a superb series. People of their word are rare.
I thought this scene depicted Bushido's view of life and death through Mariko's death. Mariko continues to live, searching for value and purpose in death as well as in life. She is proud of her family lineage, accepts the mission given to her by Toranaga as the value of her death, and in the end, Mariko... He died while saving Anjin's life. Even though Mariko didn't appear in this scene, I think it was a wonderful scene that beautifully and poignantly portrayed Mariko's soul.
4:22 that shot dude.. there is a sigh of relief but also sadness, he can see a new future towards it but also there is anger in him. he wants to cry but he can't. so much emotions expressed at once. Comos Jarvis bravo 🔥
Portugal is an eternal friend of England
England's - later Britain's - oldest alliance.
Funny how he says we'll never have peace, which at the time probably wasn't possible, but Protestants and Catholics no longer wage war. I'm Protestant and worked at a Catholic School. The Italian Priest there knew I was and we had some good conversations.
It was so painful and impressive, how he cried.
I'm English, but I thought his accent was quite convincingly Portuguese. Found out later he is an English actor too.
Another heart broken 😢
Father Alvito is based on Fr. João Rodrigues, SJ
You can actually pinpoint the second when his heart rips in half.
Like how the soldiers at the back just standing there without knowing what they are saying.
Best scene of the show. Alvito was such an impactful character despite little screen time. Edit: only flaw of the show is that there is no way Mariko remained in one piece after that blast.
Blast works in many ways. Sometimes people next to the blast are untouched, but others near them are killed, depends on the explosives & nature of surrounding materials.
Also that and there is no way Tornaga's ridiculous plan would work.
Blackthorne's face as he get's sailed away heartbreaking

This show was simply amazing
The show was pretty faithful to the book. Everyone should read the book. Some slight changes.
Throughout the show we see Alvito as this stereotypical villain. The evil priest, who would stop at nothing to kill Blackthorne. This pageant brute from England But as the show progresses he notices Blackthorne becoming one of the people in Japan. A man who seems completely different to what he originally was. And this is the moment Alvito decides to let Blackthorne live. Marikos death is of course a catalyst and strong reason for keeping Blackthorne alive, but I believe he truly had faith in him.
Both he and the the head priest had a lot of their screentime cut with almost no confrontation between Blackthorne and the Captain of the black ship
I never saw him as a stereotypical villain, he was clearly a good man who tried to help people, but constantly got caught up in the machinations of his much more cynical and corrupt superiors.
The actor who plays Blackthorne could narrate War Of The Worlds. Sounds like Richard Burton.
Kinda cool guy.
“It was Lady Maria” 😭
He didn't have to say that.
The sound of crows; it is ubiquitous in Japan.

Mariko sama + John Blaclthorne...
you know I'm surprised they didn't make Father Alvito some kind of evil manipulating character. haven't read the book but considering this is a Protestant PoV story, I would have thought there would be a harsher depiction of catholics. I'm surprised how caring and compassionate (and honest) Father Alvito is, definitely one of my favorite side characters in the show.
Is this show a single season only?
It's so refreshing to see a production like this... amidst the swill Hollywood keeps throwing at us constantly. Watching these two actors at the top of their makes me believe that they're not acting.
Blackthorne rode the boat and became a twitch streamer
Seeing the Portuguese and the Spanish being the side characters who have the same intention as they conquered the new world. Father Alvito helped Mariko with her grief and purpose. Mariko christian name Maria how both although of different cultures. Father Alvito served his purpose as a man of God and she ensured John was safe even after she was gone. Both lost a dear friend, John lost his love. Mariko will live on as a fearless honorable warrior graceful in elegance as a Lady.
The part that everyone is missing here is that in 1616 Toranaga (historically Known as Tokugawa) wiped out the Christians in Japan. Its estimated he killed over 250,000 of his own people, to root out Christianity once and for all, and confined the Portuguese to Nagasaki for the next 250 years.
The Portuguese weren't allowed at all. It was the Dutch who were allowed to trade through Nagasaki, because they agreed not to evangelize.
If Tokugawa hadn't done that, the Japanese actors' native language would have been Portuguese, I imagine.
this is not at all the original serie, which was a hundred times superior

In real life, the Shogun that Toranaga is based on banned all Christians from Japan, which set the stage for the series Blue Eyed Samurai a few decades later.

Is there a second part or not?
Apparently no. Haven't read it but my understanding is they covered the whole book. Though if enough money is offered, I'm sure it'd give at least someone second thoughts
@@solokalnesaltam3015 You dont ruin something good by overdoing it, so there is no season 2 as there shouldnt be
If it's the same as the original, there will be no season 2. The author is also already deceased. The story is based on fact. Although the names have been changed, Toranaga won the battle against Ishido and his clan's era lasted from 1603 to 1868, a time without war that Toranaga had hoped for. After that, Edo was renamed Tokyo. Anjin stayed in Japan until his death. There is a memorial at the site of his house in Tokyo and his grave in neighboring Kanagawa Prefecture.

The novel ends, but the history of Japan is interesting from here on out.The battle at Sekigahara with Ishido, a grand location similar to Game of Thrones, thousands of extras, and a bloody battle scene alone could make a second season. In season 3, the battle of Ochiba (Yodo-dono) who turned around and led Toranaga to victory in the Battle of Sekigahara, and his son fights Toranaga at the impregnable Osaka Castle, the winter camp, the battle of the summer camp, and the novel is written in a foreign country. Although the original author is a human being, starting from season 2, Japanese historians and talented screenwriters selected from Japan will be involved in the production, so the Japanese culture will be doubled. In season 2, Ochiha will be played by Fumika Nikaido, who will be the main character. It will be interesting because he will be the main character along with Hiroyuki Sanada. The Battle of Sekigahara, the Winter Siege, and the Summer Siege will reach the climax in history. Also, Mariko-sama and Yabushige, who passed away in season 1, will appear in flashback scenes, so they will likely appear in season 2 as well. Seasons 2 and 3 are likely to have a larger global audience than season 1. Please consider making a season 2.
